At last week’s Federal Consortium for Virtual Worlds, I was asked to talk about how cloud computing could potentially be used in the future to create large-scale immersive environments for the enterprise. It was part of a fascinating discussion panel highlighted by the acting CIO from USDA discussing the internal (and therefore secure?) cloud his team is assembling for government applications. Below are my slides from the presentation.

Government 2.0: The not so Secret Society of the Goverati
What is the goverati? Mark Drapeau defines it as made up of people with first-hand knowledge of how the government operates, who understand how to use social software to accomplish a variety of government missions, and who want to use that knowledge for the benefit of all.
Today our society faces numerous challenges from the economy to the climate. As a democratic society we must engage the general public and crowd source the solutions. That said, we have a long way to go and the goverati can not do it alone. Do you want to be part of the solution? Moreover, how can your government enable you to execute on your ideas?
The SciLands is a mini-continent and user community in the virtual world platform Second Life devoted exclusively to science and technology. There are over 20 science and technology related organizations in the SciLands, including government agencies, universities and museums. SciLands members have regular meetings in Second Life where they share ideas, help each other, and plan future projects. Members also share resources like meeting spaces on their islands. Careful planning, organization, and technical features ensure that SciLands continues to grow.
To get a sim (a private region) in the SciLands, you’ll have to order a sim from the Second Life Land Store (operated by Linden Lab and not associated with the SciLands) and you’ll also have to apply to join the SciLands. To apply to join the SciLands, click the application link below. A representative from SciLands should then contact you to discuss details.
